The Cougars have some doubters coming into this season. After their first Final Four appearance in almost four decades, Houston had a lot of changeover with talent. Yet, with some developed talent, and few good transfers, they look to be a threat not just in the American Athletic Conference, but in the National Tournament as well. They have only played twice this season, surviving an overtime battle with Hofstra, before beating in-state foe Rice this past Friday.
The Cavs come in on the edge of the national rankings, despite only winning the whole thing in 2019, and finishing atop the ACC standings last season. However, with many of their top scorers moving on from the program, some holes are left to be filled by the up-and-comers for UVA. Some of the young players’ inexperience showed in their season opener against Navy, where the Cavaliers fell 66-58. Virginia did find a way to rebound following a win over Radford this past Friday.

Yes, the calendar says November, but there should be a March Madness atmosphere Tuesday night when the Houston Cougars host a recent NCAA tournament champion at Fertitta Center.
No. 15 Houston is riding a two-game win streak to start the season when it enters its contest against the Virginia Cavaliers, who were the 2019 NCAA national champions.
The 2-0 Coogs are counting on the hot scoring abilities of their stars Kyler Edwards and Marcus Sasser, who are each averaging double figures through two games. Sasser, in particular, has been on fire, shooting nearly 49% from the field and nearly 45% from three-point land.
Virginia, which began the season ranked 25th in the national polls, enters its matchup with Houston unranked after an upset loss to Navy to start the season.
The Cavaliers are often in the preseason conversation to run away with the Atlantic Coast Conference, but they have had to re-adjust after losing eight members of last season’s team that won the ACC’s regular season title.
Houston will be faced with the task of stopping Virginia’s senior leader Jayden Gardner and junior transfer Armaan Franklin, who are at the top of scoring for UVA.
All told, the non-conference face-off could weigh heavy implications during tournament time.
The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off, and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
